Tom Barnett to Share Community Development Success Strategies

Not so long ago Paducah, Kentucky was your normal mid-size American town of 26,000 residents, facing the same struggles many communities of that size face. With economic challenges and a downtown lined with dilapidated buildings, the city tapped Tom Barnett to lead efforts to transform and revitalize the beleaguered community. With a small budget and a bit of seed money, Barnett laid out a plan in 2000 that would eventually incentivize and lure artists to live and work in the small western Kentucky town. Within two years, Barnett and Paducah would garner national attention as the model for community development and revitalization. By 2002, Paducah area tourism revenues alone had increased by?$10 million.

Organizations, Artists can Benefit from Tourism Programs

by Joel Gavin, Director of Marketing and Communications

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend a day getting to know our friends at the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department - another state agency that offers programs and services that can benefit Oklahoma arts. While the Oklahoma Arts Council's role is to lead and support in the development of the state's arts industry, the tourism department can be thought of as the state's marketing agency.

During my visit, tourism department staff expressed a great deal of interest in the arts. Many indicated how eager they are to promote the events and activities of arts and cultural organizations, communities and artists. With that in mind, here are a few ways you can connect with the department and benefit from their services:

Travelwire
This news wire service goes out to a broad range of media and others. You can send story ideas, photos, and news releases for Travelwire to Austin Tacket via email at: Austin@TravelOK.com.

Discover Oklahoma
This weekly television show spotlights interesting stories and events around Oklahoma. They are definitely interested in featuring the arts! Contact Shel Wagner or Dino Lalli at: Shel@TravelOKcom or Dino@TravelOK.com.

TravelOK Website
One of the top tourism websites in the U.S., this is the place to list your event so that the thousands of people visiting the site each month might learn about it.

The tourism department offers a variety of other services that might benefit your work. I highly encourage Oklahoma arts organizations and artists to get acquainted with their staff and services when seeking marketing and promotional opportunities. Check out this page on their website for more information.
