Kristie Ming Tan Ngo is a native of Malaysia and immigrated to the United States in 1992.  Her paintings have won numerous awards  and in 2007, her artwork, “A Scissortail Returns “ was showcased in the Oklahoma Centennial Chinese Cultural Exhibition and is now permanently part of the Oklahoma History Center collection. Her fascinating residencies explore Chinese watercolor or brushwork with bamboo brushes. In addition to traditional “rice paper” paintings, she helps students transform paper plates into beautiful “china”. Students may also make book markers, greeting cards or traditional fans and she even combined Japanese Origami (paper folding arts) together with her Chinese watercolors and is highly appreciated by the kids, besides she also translates their American name into Chinese characters and have them write their own Chinese name on their artwork.

Arts Learning Goals:

  • To provide students with an opportunity to work closely with a professional artist.
  • To provide for the greater understanding and appreciation of different art forms and the arts of diverse cultures.
  • Students will apply new knowledge as a basis of creative expression.
  • To increase the students’ knowledge and familiarity with the Chinese culture.
  • To provide students with an opportunity to create artwork using the process of Chinese brush painting.
  • To encourage a cooperative commitment among artistic educators and the community to make arts an integral part of the total learning experience for all Oklahomans.
