9:45am - 11:15am Parachute Cloth Murals
Location: Central National Bank Center, 301 S. Independence Ave.
Room: 205
Presenters: Keir Johnston - Featured Presenter
Known commonly as parachute cloth, Polytab is a light-weight material that is becoming increasingly used to create large public mural projects. By painting on parachute cloth, the mural can be completely designed and painted in a studio space and then later installed on an outdoor wall. This method allows the mural creation to take place despite harsh weather conditions, and artists are not required to work on scaffolding in order to paint the mural. Parachute cloth murals also are less likely than the direct application of paint to damage the exterior surface of buildings. With 15 years of experience in utilizing parachute cloth to create murals, Keir Johnston of Amber Art & Design will discuss how this unique material and painting practice transcend the traditional experience of creating public art. Johnston will provide a basic overview of how to get started with a parachute cloth mural in your community.

Location: Central National Bank Center, 301 S. Independence Ave.
Room: Junior Ballroom East
Presenters: Anita G. Arnold - Presenter, Mary Margaret Schoenfeld - Presenter
In the last few months, we’ve watched as others have contended with hurricanes Harvey and Irma, fires in the northwest, and the civic unrest in Charlottesville. Less newsworthy are the countless upheavals that can leave an organization reeling – a technology crash, or the sudden death of a key staff person. Natural disasters and human-centered disturbances are a part of life. Yet even where emergencies have happened in the past, research shows that artists and arts organizations affected by disasters generally do not change their business practices to be better prepared for the future. In this session, we will review basics of emergency preparedness, feature commentary by participants who have lived and managed through disasters, and include small group exercises for you to begin or expand upon your own preparedness plan, no matter what size or focus of your organization.

Room: 402 - 404
Presenters: Ben Ezzell - Panelist, Angie Maidt - Panelist, Cub Olson - Panelist, romy owens - Panelist, - Panelist
romy owens' public art for Enid is an artist-led initiative, meaning she created her own opportunity to create public art instead of waiting for an opportunity to present itself through an RFP, RFQ, or Call for Artists. Using a crowdfunding platform and social media, she raised 75 percent of the funds needed to complete this public art. The remaining 25 percent was provided through existing grant programs available to individual artists. She also worked with local businesses to seek in-kind services and materials. This panel will discuss the significance of artist-led initiatives, the skills necessary to create work without the formal structure of a public art program, and the process through which they went in creating this public art for the city of Enid.
