Room: 405
Support local artists by shopping at the Enid Arts Council Pop-Up Shop. Located in Room 405 at Central National Bank Center, the shop includes paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, and handmade crafts by several of Enid's local artists. Payments by cash, check, and credit card are accepted.

8:30am - 5:00pm The Hive Mind
Room: Hall of Fame
Upon checking in at registration, all conference members will receive their own four-inch hexagon that can be personalized and added to the larger hive. Come prepared to create and contribute your own drawing, collage, thought, word, or poem on your hexagon. After creating a buzz at the Oklahoma Arts Conference, the Hive Mind will be placed on display in a downtown Enid location.

This interactive art activity will take place October 25 and 26 in the
Hall of Fame on the first floor of the Central National Bank Center. Art supplies are provided, but you may also bring your own. All contributors to the Hive Mind will receive a package of seeds for plants that attract and feed bees.

This activity is made possible by Main Street Enid, the Enid Arts Council, Visit Enid, Matt O’Neal , Daniel Schmehl, Bayer Crop Science and Enid host community members.

Start your 2017 Oklahoma Arts Conference off on a high note by gathering with your Enid community hosts and fellow conference attendees for a high-spirited opening session. Led by Enid conference co-chairs, Cathy Breyley, Marcy Jarrett, and Kelly Tompkins, this lively morning program will help you learn how to make the most of your entire conference experience and your visit to Enid.

Utilizing the Amber Art & Design collective as an example, this session will cover best practice techniques for fostering community engagement and collaboration. Focusing on the collective’s unique approach to their organizational creation and practice, Keir Johnston will discuss how the collective’s hands-on public art projects and community involvement have been key factors in new partnerships with institutional, academic, and local and national organizations.

9:45am - 11:15am Lessons Learned: Next Steps for Strengthening Arts Education in Oklahoma

In 2014, Oklahoma was selected as one of 10 states by Americans for the Arts to participate in the State Pilot Policy Project (SP3), a program designed to advance arts education by having state teams identify meaningful objectives and outcomes based on each state's environment and resources. The Oklahoma Arts Council's involvement in the three-year initiative included convening a statewide task force to advise on the project and conduct in-depth research based on the priorities the task force identified. Now that the pilot project has been completed, the research from the SP3 initiative will be shared and explained. Discussion will include how Oklahomans can translate the information into actionable steps and messages that can advance arts education policy and programs.

This interactive session covers a broad overview of aspects that artists and creative entrepreneurs need to consider when developing an action plan for their careers; touching upon key points in topics such as law, finance, strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, and networking. Participants will be presented with and guided through the New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Action Plan. This flexible and dynamic action plan provides a blueprint for future projects, career objectives, and business goals. This session is geared towards artists of all disciplines.

Join our panel of development career veterans to hear more about how they have built relationships, garnered meaningful support, and fostered donors for their organizations. Panelists will share best practices for making “the ask” and how to make donors feel invested and passionate about your organization’s mission and vision. Ample time will be provided for audience Q&A.

Do you care about the arts in your community? Do you want to make sure that cultural opportunities are available to anyone in our state regardless of income level or physical ability? This session will feature a brief overview of state support for the arts, and it will include a look at our state legislators’ perspectives on advocating arts and culture and arts education.

Combining two strategic planning tools from New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA)’s Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp program, NYFA staff will provide practical advice to help you support your artistic practice and self-evaluate your strategies from a big picture perspective using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis to SMART Goal setting that provides practical advice for setting long and short term goals. This workshop will provide an opportunity to work in small groups or pairs and identify action steps for your arts career. This session is geared towards artists of all disciplines.
1:15pm - 2:45pm The Barn Quilt Trails of Oklahoma

Originating in Appalachia in 2001, the barn quilt phenomenon is now present in nearly all 50 U.S. states, and it has the capacity to stimulate rural economies. Barn quilts, which are square-shaped boards painted to resemble a quilt block and placed on the side of a barn or public building, have evolved into a rural development initiative that boosts tourism. Through the development and promotion of barn quilt trails, tourists have been encouraged to visit and explore rural communities. The creation of barn quilts in communities and schools has been effective in building social capital, celebrating community heritage, raising funds for schools, and teaching skills that combine science, math, and design. Hear about how the OSU Extension Educators are leading the way in establishing Oklahoma’s first Barn Quilt Trails, and find out more about how your community can be involved.

With nearly 100 partnerships across the United States, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts provides professional training for teachers and fosters partnerships between arts organizations and local schools. Representatives from Oklahoma City Public Schools, Black Liberated Arts Center, Inc., Enid Arts Council, and Enid Public Schools will discuss the background, benefits, and measurable impact of local Kennedy Center Partnerships in Oklahoma City and Enid. Panelists will also share information on how your local schools and arts organizations can work together to develop and implement a successful Kennedy Center Partners in Education application.
1:30pm - 2:45pm Innovation Station Idea Exchange

The Innovation Station Idea Exchange provides a lively forum where artists, arts and community leaders, and others can present brief, two-minute descriptions of new works in process, ideas for new projects, or artistic community-based collaborations. The Idea Exchange can be used as a "show and tell" for the innovative things happening in your community or studio. You can use your two minutes to share favorite resources, books, and websites that you would recommend to other arts leaders. This session is an excellent opportunity for networking and developing new collaborations. Prior to this session, participants will have the option to sign up at the conference registration to present their ideas - feel free to get creative with your presentation.

3:00pm - 5:00pm Figure Drawing Lesson with Sara and Shane Scribner
Room: Scribner's Studio
Join artists Sara and Shane Scribner in their studio to participate in a two-hour figure drawing class. Using a live, clothed model, they will teach basic techniques for figure drawing. Boards, paper, and standard drawing media will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own personal drawing supplies such as paper, pencils, chalk, charcoal, and erasers. Cost per lesson is $15 per person, which can be paid at registration. Availability is limited to 12 people, and this opportunity is available first-come, first served.

This session will provide a general introduction to the Philadelphia-based Amber Art & Design collective, the media that they incorporate into their work, and their general approach to community engagement, public art making, and community narrative sharing. The presentation will provide an overview of the lead artists, their chronology, and the evolution of the organization. Recent projects and examples of neighborhood-based public art projects will be shared and discussed. The presentation will include creative tactics that can be applied when renewing the use and function of architecture in a process that engages the community.

Oklahoma's newly released Arts & Economic Prosperity Report provides solid evidence of the significant direct economic impact of arts and cultural nonprofits across the state. This session will examine how you can determine the economic impact of the arts on your community. Learn how to translate the data into an effective story about the economic impact of your organization or event.
3:15pm - 4:45pm Engaging Veterans and the Military Community in Creative Self-Expression

Launched in 2015, the Oklahoma Arts Council’s Oklahoma Arts and the Military Initiative is a strategic effort directed at meeting the needs of Oklahoma’s military community through the arts. Through a partnership between the Oklahoma Arts Council and the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs two pilot arts programs were launched at the veterans’ centers in Norman (2016) and Lawton (2017). Formal evaluation of the first pilot program was conducted, resulting in the catalogue, "Engaging Veterans through Creative Expression," a free online resource that can assist individuals and organizations in providing programming for veterans and military members in their communities. Research findings from the evaluation will be shared during this session. Lead organizers and teaching artists who have been directly involved in the pilot programs will discuss the impact and healing components of the arts experiences.

The imitation of other writers’ works has been a staple of writing pedagogy since the time of ancient Greeks. Imitation is a great tactic to help you start writing when you’re feeling stuck. It’s also an excellent way to pay close attention to structure, style, tone, and word choice. In this writing workshop, participants will examine different examples of prose and poetry that have been created through imitation. Participants will learn writing exercises that include imitation techniques. These techniques can be modified for high school and college writing and composition classes.

Everyone working in the nonprofit sector knows that telling the story of what your organization does, and who it impacts, is crucial. However, just knowing that storytelling is important doesn't mean you know what stories to tell, and how to do it. This seminar will equip you with ways to clarify what the story of your organization actually is, and it will empower you with techniques to help share that story better internally and externally.

Meet with Jerry Yoshitomi to talk through an issue or problem that you and/or your organization are facing. Questions to consider: 1. What problem do you need to solve? 2. What have you already tried? How did it work? 3. If you're successful in solving the problem, what would it mean for you? (artistically, financially, emotionally?) Consultations are 20 minutes and availability is limited to 5 individual sessions. You must be registered for the conference to sign-up for a consultation. You are encouraged to bring an additional representative from your organization to your appointment. These consultations are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Join your Enid community hosts and fellow arts conference attendees for an evening of good company, hors d’oeuvres, and live music in some of Enid’s most creative spaces. Conference guests can meander through the Leonardo’s Children’s Museum Education Annex, Creative Arts Enid, and Mike Klemme Photography while networking with peers from across the state. Sponsored by Visit Enid, the Enid Arts Council and the conference host committee, this lively evening celebration is a block party you won’t want to miss. Parking is available in the lots on 2nd Street and Maple.
