Mike Larsen

Mike Larsen of Perkins, Oklahoma, is a classically trained artist with over 50 years of experience creating large-scale paintings and bronze works. He describes himself as a history keeper and storyteller. He has long been inspired by the dynamic beauty of Oklahoma’s landscapes and its people. As a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, Larsen draws particular inspiration from the rich heritage and legacy of excellence of the Chickasaw people.
Art in this exhibition highlight Larsen’s style in mastering both figurative and landscape depictions. His carefully crafted works illustrate the legacy of Chickasaw culture. Through the use of layered painting, Larsen’s works often show the painted surfaces beneath, adding to the character of his signature artistic style.

Larsen’s accolades include numerous honors, such as inductions into the Chickasaw Hall of Fame in 2000, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2015, and the Oklahoma Historian’s Hall of Fame in 2016. Larsen was presented with a Special Recognition Award at the Governor’s Arts Awards in 2012. His commissioned works include six mural projects and five monumental-sized bronzes.

Notably, one of his largest works, commissioned by the Oklahoma Arts Council in 1991, is a 26-foot mural entitled Flight of Spirit, which hangs in the north alcove on the fourth floor of the Oklahoma State Capitol, honoring the five world-renowned Oklahoma Native American ballerinas. Larsen’s large-scale works have garnered significant acclaim, including the selection of his piece Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ as a postage stamp commemorating the Oklahoma Centennial in 2007. Through his work, Larsen continues to tell the story of Oklahoma—honoring its past, celebrating its people, and contributing to the vibrant momentum that shapes the state’s future.
