Anke E. Dodson
Oklahoma in Focus: A Journey Through Time and Terrain
North Gallery - January 17 — March 10, 2025

Tulsa-based artist Anke Dodson specializes in painterly realism, exploring a variety of subject matter including landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes. Her artistic career has been shaped by her studies with nationally recognized artists such as Stephen Quiller, Anne Flattman, and Judy Betts, whose expertise in pastel, watercolor, and printmaking has influenced Dodson’s approach. A lifelong learner, Dodson often integrates new techniques into her style after attending workshops to explore multiple new media.
Artwork featured in this exhibition includes watercolor paintings of well-known Tulsa landmarks—highlighting Anke’s technical drawing skill—alongside more painterly land and seascapes. Dodson’s attention to detail and precise linework create captivating images that encourage the viewer to more closely consider their city or natural surroundings. Born and raised in East Germany, Dodson and her family fled to West Germany where she grew up in the foothills of the Alps near incredible architectural structures including castles, museums, and cathedrals.

Dodson is captivated by the cities that surround her, and in particular her home city of Tulsa. “Tulsa is so young in comparison to what I’m used to. Downtown was stamped out of the ground in less than two decades. It’s just amazing. I always find new things to look at in these buildings. There’s just something about them that’s fascinating.”
As she often works on commission-based pieces, Dodson particularly enjoys working with clients to bring the visions of their building or landscape to life. Notably, the Community National Bank of Kansas commissioned her to create a series of historical works based on seven of their branches.
Dodson’s work has been featured in National Watercolor USA exhibitions and other prestigious shows and is held in numerous corporate and private collections in the United States, Germany, and France. Dodson is represented by the Royce Myers Gallery in Tulsa and the Eva Reynolds Gallery in Leawood, Kansas, and her work can be found in the virtual galleries of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and the Tulsa Artists Guild. Through her use of traditional and contemporary media, Dodson continues to captivate audiences with her stunning depictions of both natural and urban landscapes.
