Strike by Brunel Faris

The Artwork

Strike is a good representation of Brunel Faris' use of found objects in collage. By using red and orange, colors that are considered warm, along with the deconstructed matchbox, Faris visually conveys the idea of fire. He has also pasted the few components with blue markings near the center of the composition. This provides emphasis through contrast in this abstract artwork.

The Artist

Brunel Faris received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Oklahoma. Faris was a driving force in the Oklahoma City arts community for more than four decades. In addition to his progressive and prolific career as an artist, he also served as an arts administrator at the Oklahoma Science and Arts Foundation and as Professor of Art and Chairman of the Art Department at Oklahoma City University.

Faris was well known for his sensitive drawings as well as his insightful and witty mixed media works including his collages and his 'variables' which allowed the viewer to rearrange elements of an abstract painting through the use of a magnetic board.

Brunel’s work is represented in the collections of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma, Philbrook Museum of Art, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, and the Tulsa Performing Art Center.
