This lesson will introduce the students to the basics of color theory, as well as the ways in which artists use color to guide the viewer’s attention through a paintings composition.Activity: Genres in Painting (PDF)
Landscapes, portraits, and historical paintings are all categories, or genres, of painting which your students will see when exploring the Capitol Art Collection. This lesson will help students understand and differentiate the various genres in the visual arts. Students will learn to identify major genres, and will learn to discriminate between a painting’s subject and its genre.
