The Artwork

This photograph shows the dependent relationship of the farmer upon the land for natural resources and the effects of the farmer on the land. As humans have altered the land to make it more suitable for farming, the natural effects of precipitation, wind, and sunlight have had an effect on the barn as it appears to slowly being reclaimed by nature. Shane Brown captured this image in a manner which reinforces this delicate relationship between man and the earth. Just as the wooden structure has become weathered, the earthen hill shows the effects of being worn by human use.

The Artist

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Shane Brown spent his childhood in rural areas throughout Oklahoma. After graduating from Skiatook High School in 1993, Brown joined the United States Air Force where his travels to Asia and the western part of the United States played a role in the evolution of his work. After completing his service, Brown received a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from Oklahoma State University. While attending OSU, he also studied photography earning an Associate of Applied Science. In the fall of 2003, Brown received a Lew Wentz Undergraduate Research Grant to facilitate his documentation of the cultural landscape of Oklahoma. Then in 2008, he earned his Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Oklahoma. In addition to producing fine art photography, Brown produces editorial photography for publications including Oklahoma Today and The Wall Street Journal.
