Bio:

Mariana Llanos is an award-winning children’s books writer, poet, and translator who visits schools and libraries with the main goal of sharing her passion for reading and writing. She was born in Lima, Peru, and has lived in Oklahoma since 2002. Her book Benita y las Criaturas Nocturnas/Benita and the Night Creatures was recognized with a 2024 Pura Belpre Honor (American Library Association) and the 2024 Oklahoma Book Award, among many other accolades. Her book Run Little Chaski! earned numerous awards, including the 2022 Oklahoma Book Award. Llanos has 14 children’s books to her name including the new chapter book series, Vampirita.

Since 2015, Llanos has visited schools to instill in students a love for reading and writing. Her presentations are energetic and combine different artistic elements like storytelling, performing, music, and arts/crafting. Her goal is to convey the message that reading is fun. She also facilitates writing workshops for students where the final project is a published book. In addition to working with students, Llanos facilitates teacher development workshops where the focus is children’s literature and multicultural learning. She has taught workshops at the UCLA Latin American Institute, including, Writing in Two Cultures and Using Picture Books in the Classroom. As an English-as-second-language individual, Llanos connects with students and parents whose main language is Spanish, but she presents to a wide range of audiences.
