"Promise in the Road Ahead"

LaVerna Capes
LaVerna Capes (Kiowa and Wichita) is the manager of the Oklahoma Indian Arts and Crafts Cooperative in Anadarko. Founded in 1955, the co-op is an independent arts and crafts business owned and operated by Native American artists and craftspeople. Capes’ mother was the first manager of the co-op. Today, the co-op continues to sell work made by members of the seven Southern Plains Indian Tribes of Southwest Oklahoma. The co-op also offers master classes for artists and repairs and mends regalia. Capes specializes in beadwork, moccasins, and buckskin dresses.

The artist co-op business model is one way that visual artists can organize to support collective artistic growth, visibility, and career development. For this session, representatives from Oklahoma-based artist co-ops Oklahoma Indian Arts & Crafts Cooperative of Anadarko and BlackMoon of Tulsa will discuss the history and work of their co-ops, sharing information on best practices and keys for success. This session is recommended for artists who are considering the possibility of starting a co-op.
